What is a Dynamometer?
A dynamometer is a device designed to test engine performance under controlled conditions.
Stuska Dynamometers are the highest quality, and most economical waterbrake dynamometers available. Our dynos are designed to assist in testing a wide range of engine speeds and types, including those burning gasoline and diesel fuels.
What is a waterbrake?
Dynamometers use water as a load mechanism during engine testing. Water flow proportional to desired applied load is used to create resistance to the engine or motor. A controlled flow of water is directed at the absorber center, and via centrifugal force, is expelled towards the outside of the dynamometer and into the stator. As the water hits the stator, it decelerates, causing an applied load to the input device. Through the water's continual acceleration and deceleration, load may be controlled and measured. This is a very effective and safe way to measure the performance of an engine running under a controlled load. The dynamometers feature water as a braking mechanism, (or absorber), hence the name waterbrake.
How are they built?
The dynamometers and their components are manufactured and assembled in-house at our Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin plant. The dynamometers are machined from treated aluminum castings, and their assemblies are dynamically balanced. The hydraulic torque measurement system developed by Stuska in 1963 features a patented transducer cylinder seal, resulting in a sensitive and virtually friction-free assembly, not possible with sliding or pressure sealing systems. Stuska dynamometers are reversible with no loss in absorption capability and may be crafted for vertical shaft engines if required. The dyno gauges are accurate to plus or minus 1/2 of 1% of full scale from absolute at any point.
What about a Warranty?
Stuska Dynamometers are guaranteed to perform at their rated capacity, using properly specified components. All components are warranted against defective materials and workmanship by replacement or repair by the factory for one year after purchase
